Frequently Asked Questions
FAQs
Do I need a doctor’s referral?
Generally, no referral is needed. The only exceptions are plans which specifically require it and workers’ comp claims.
What if I need to cancel my appointment?
Please call as soon as possible as our schedule is often booked and last minute cancellations prevent other patients from coming in for needed treatments. We request 24 hour notice for cancellations. We do not charge in case of emergencies, winter road conditions, or if the patient has a fever.
How does acupuncture work?
There are two main ways of answering this question: 1. From the perspective of Eastern holism and 2. From the perspective of modern Western science.
Eastern philosophy purports that every living organism is part of a living planet as well as part of an infinite cosmos. Furthermore, every living organism is a holographic image, or a microcosm, or the macrocosms of the earthly ecosystem as well as the entire universe. Certain branches of modern science have come to the same conclusions, for example, the theories of relativity and quantum physics, and new studies in epistemology. Following these principles, it is thought that acupuncture helps the body to connect to and mirror the energetic patterns of nature, thereby supporting the body’s own ability to heal itself. It is also said to smooth, balance, and strengthen the flow of energy in the body, and that these effects result in an overall healthier body, mind, and spirit.
From a Western medicine perspective, research has demonstrated that the effects of acupuncture could be explained by nerve conduction theory, fascia and connective tissue structure doctrine, bioelectrical impulses, biochemical and other physiological factors. For example, the release of endorphins, improved circulation, and immune system stimulation are a few of the documented effects of acupuncture.
Are the needles sterile? Are they re-used?
Dr. Eastin only uses one-time use sterile needles and disposes of them in biohazard containers after the treatment. They are never re-used.
What training is required for acupuncturists?
All licensed acupuncturists hold a four year Master’s Degree in Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine which required more than 3,300 hours of training. In addition, Dr. Eastin also holds a Doctorate of Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine, which consists of an intensive two-year course of study. She has also passed the national board exams NCCAOM (in Biomedicine, Acupuncture, Oriental Medicine, and Chinese Herbology) and is a Licensed Acupuncturist (L.Ac.) in the state of Oregon.
Does it hurt?
Acupuncture treatments typically do not hurt. Infrequently, there may be a brief, mild pinching sensation as the needles are inserted, but this subsides quickly. With the needles in place, clients may feel pressure, tingling, aching, warmth, or a heavy sensation. Some mild sensations are desired, it means the body is responding to the treatment and the nervous and circulatory systems are being stimulated. It is not expected to be uncomfortable or painful. The goal is for patients to rest comfortably during their treatments.
How many treatments will I need?
Initially we typically suggest a short treatment plan of 1–2 treatments per week for 2–4 weeks, then we do an evaluation to establish the patient’s rate of response. Further treatments are suggested according to the patient’s wishes, their rate of response, their health goals, and choice of treatment options. In general, the treatment of short-term issues requires fewer treatments. Many patients enjoy, and can benefit greatly from, ongoing bi-weekly to monthly treatments.
Are there any risks or side effects with acupuncture?
Generally, there are no contraindications to receiving acupuncture. Some conditions may mean that certain acupuncture points or treatments are cautioned or contraindicated, and your treatment will be adjusted accordingly. It is important to eat a small meal prior to your acupuncture treatment. If you are pregnant or think you may be pregnant, please notify Dr. Eastin immediately. There are a few points that are avoided during pregnancy as a precaution. Patients who are taking a prescription blood thinner can receive acupuncture, however they have a higher chance of getting bruises.
Most people feel very relaxed and energized after an acupuncture treatment. On occasion, patients may experience a small bruise or tender area where a needle was inserted. This may present as an itching sensation after the needle is removed, and can be helped by applying pressure for a few minutes after the treatment. Occasionally the symptoms (such as pain) may increase for up to 24 hours—this is called a healing reaction, which can also happen after receiving massage or chiropractic care. After this pain decreases, usually the main health concern is overall improved. If patients experience the extremely rare reactions of: different or new pain, large bruises, swelling, difficulty breathing, or dizziness after an acupuncture treatment, we ask them to let us know immediately. The most severe possible but very rare side effect is organ puncture, particularly the lung. This is incredibly rare as acupuncturists are trained intensively to prevent such problems.
